Individuals who endured abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we want to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple members of the organization, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in Canada.

They noted the Pope was "tender" about their personal story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is hoping that changes to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, Hickey voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that bond is a step in the correct path," Hickey commented.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
